This year we are hosting the online Type Design Workshop once again.

10 intense days online. All about typefaces, as usual: theory, reinforced by practice, working on paper and digitally. Lectures, discussions about the typography rules, variable fonts, typeface classification and licensing—all for you to get fully immersed into the world of designing type—over 100 hours of class time. The authentic atmosphere we have developed and a strong team of professionals leading the workshop have allowed us to form and foster a beautiful community of the most talented and diverse individuals. The students come out of our two week long workshop with their first typeface projects and invaluable knowledge sprinkled with new experiences.

We have a tradition of giving out a free spot to our Type Design Workshops to full-time college students. Draw your name, take a selfie with the drawing and post the picture with a description of why you want to join the workshop by June 1st. Don’t forget to tag us and use the #шм2021конкурс hashtag. Type Design Workshop 2021

Maria Doreuli focuses her work around graphic and type design. She is mesmerized by letters in all their shapes and forms. After getting her first degree at Alexander Tarbeev’s type design workshop at the Moscow State University of Printing Arts, Maria was not yet satisfied, so she decided to continue her education at Type&Media at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague, so she could lean more about the art of type design and the new work methodologies. Traditional and experimental, personal and commercial: Maria’s works were awarded with multiple prestigious awards, such as: Red Dot, Communication Arts, Letter.2, Granshan, Morisawa. Her diploma project, CoFo Chimera, was awarded with the TDC² certificate in New York. In 2013, Maria came back to Russia and founded Contrast Foundry.

At the moment, Maria works and lives in California, focusing on studio work, teaching, and curating exhibitions and workshops.

Maria Doreuli

Elena Novosyolova studied at Alexander Tarbeev’s type design workshop and graduated from the Moscow State University of Printing Arts in 2006. She worked as a type designer and a calligraphy artist at Artyom Lebedev’s Studio from 2006 to 2011, where she designed letters for Yandex and the Bolshoi Theater logos, among other projects. She currently teaches at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Elena also joined Letter.work as the logo designer. A few typefaces designed by Elena are: ALS Mirta, LS Klementina, ALS Dereza, ALS Bingley, ALS Mezzo, ALS Heino, Bodoni Global.

Elena Novosyolova is a calligraphy artist and a type designer. Her main project in 2020, however, was Evsey-her lovely son.

\
At the beginning of 2021, Elena presented two self-published books at the Russian Lettering: tradition and experiment (rus. Русское письмо: традиция и эксперимент) exhibition: “Bird Alphabet” (rus. “Птичья азбука”) and Mezen (rus. “Мезень”). These books are travel and life diaries, created to showcase illustration and calligraphy.  Elena just finished working on another one: a diary about her travel—down the Vashka River.

Elena Novoselova

Nikita Sapojkov drew his first lettering on the street walls in 2005, and got a new spark of interest in type at Polygraph (rus. Полиграф), where he studied graphic and type design at Alexander Tarbeev’s workshop. In 2016 Nikita joined the Contrast Foundry. Starting 2017-2020 he is teaching graphic design at the Moscow Polytechnic University, and starting from 2018, he is leading a typeface design module in British Higher School of Art & Design.

In his work, Nikita integrates letters into various graphic spheres and spaces. He is experimenting with the type forms using Java programming. While working with the Contrast Foundry, he designed the logo for October (rus. Октябрь) skateshop. He sketched the lettering and designed Nike and Asics showcase windows for Street Beat shop. His work has been exhibited in Moscow, Kharkiv, and Lucerne.

Nikita Sapozhkov

Liza Rasskazova studied type design at Tarbeev’s workshop. She graduated from the Moscow State University of Printing Arts in 2014. She currently works at Contrast Foundry as a type and graphic designer. A participant of the type exhibitions in Moscow, Berlin (Germany) and Santiago (Chile). Taught Type in Typomania School before becoming a teacher at the British Higher School of Art & Design.

In her free time she travels and takes pictures of various typographic artifacts all over the world.

Liza also created the amazing CoFoCinema1909 typeface for the Khudozhestvenny (rus. Художественный) movie theater, when it got reopened in 2021. She came up with the idea for this type during the Type Design Workshop preparations four years ago. Liza Rasskazova

Irina Smirnova graduated with a degree in Type&Media from the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague in 2010. She translated Gerrit Noordzij’s “The Stroke: Theory of Writing” to Russian. She learned the tricks of working with a  broad nib and a flat brush from experienced calligraphy artists, such as Ann Hechle, Brody Neuenschwander, Christopher Haanes, Denis Brown, Yves Leterme, High on Type and others. Irina is the author and creator of Inder, Denk One and Fjalla One for Google Fonts, as well as the cyrillics for Museo, Museo Sans, Greta Sans, Parmigiano (co-creator), November (Granshan’17 Special Mention).

Starting from 2014, she collaborated in projects with Contrast Foundry. In 2017-18, Irina curated and led a type design course in St. Petersburg, Russia. In the autumn of 2018, she and Maksim Ilyinov founded Kꙭperativ (rus. кꙭператив), a space to work on type scientifically and artistically, while staying connected to the professional and commercial field.

Together with Maksim Ilyinov, Irina painted a 3 meters high wall using wide brushes, gaining experience and creating a magnificent project.

Irina Smirnova

Anya Khorash graduated from the Moscow State University of Printing Arts in 2018, where she studied at Alexander Tarbeev’s type design workshop. As she was studying, she also joined Contrast Foundry, where she focused on the prevalence of Cyrillic-based writing systems and started her work on the variable font CoFo Peshka. In 2020 Anya moved to Tel Aviv-Yafo, where she studied type design for Hebrew and Python programming. In 2021, she started studying Type&Media at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague.

Anya helped to design the Golden Mask, a Russian theatre festival, exhibitions at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Jewish Museum. She also worked on design for MARSH Architecture School. A prizewinner of the book contest Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt 2019. Practiced calligraphy and programming at the High on Type workshops by Brody Neuenschwander, Bernd Volmer, Frederik Berlaen. An active participant of exhibitions in Moscow, Leipzig, and Chamonix. Loves calligraphy experiments, lettering and incorporates them in her projects whenever possible.

Anya spends her free time rock climbing, doing acrobatics, studies non-Latin letters and collects random street writing. 

Anna Khorash

Alexander Tarbeev studied type design from Mikhail Bolshakov and Georgy Kozubov at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute (MPI) and from Lyubov Kuznetsova at the Typedesign Department at NII Poligrafmash, where he started working in 1988, and ended up being the last artist to join the team. Alexander has 18 years of experience in teaching type design at various schools: Moscow State University, Moscow State University of Printing Arts, British Higher School of Art & Design, Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM). Professor, the head of the type design workshop at the Artistic and Technical Design of Printed Materials at the Moscow State University of Printing Arts. Among his students are Ksenia Belobrova, Anya Danilova, Maria Doreuli, Vera Evstafieva, Oleg Matsuev, Elena Novosyolova, Daria Petrova, Elizaveta Rasskazova, Nikita Sapozhkov, Dmitry Yakovlev.

He says that as a professional engineer in the past, he spends his nights programming random things using Processing and Nodebox to take a break from type design.

Alexander Tarbeev

Egor Golovyrin started doing calligraphy art at the age of twelve—at the same time as he got introduced to the street graffiti culture. Ever since then Egor embraces hand drawing and the almost tangible feel of the materials in his work, including his commercial and digital projects. He is actively experimenting with letters, successfully managing to balance the harmony of the classic imagery and the energy of the modern forms. Egor draws his inspiration from various traditions of lettering and transforms the shapes and forms from his surroundings into typeforms. Believes improvisation to be the key approach to the creation of new designs.

Egor graduated from Moscow Polytechnic University, where he studied type design at Alexander Tarbeev’s workshop and typography at Innokentiy Keleynikov’s course. He is currently teaching lettering at the British Higher School of Art & Design. A participant of the Russian Lettering: tradition and experiment (rus. Русское письмо: традиция и эксперимент) exhibition and Patriart (rus. Патриарт). He is also a co-author of the logo and typeface of Citymobil (rus. Ситимобил). In 2020 he joined the Contrast Foundry and is now currently preparing to release Kabeltouw (rus. Кабельтов)—his new typeface project.

When he is not designing letters on the screen, he is drawing letters with a brush, carving them out on wood and stone, as well as doing extreme cycling and listening to music.
