About
Type Design Workshop PRO is an online course for beginner type designers who seek to enhance and develop their projects and skills while diving deeper into the profession of a type designer.
The classes will consist of lectures, practice and individual consultations. During the course we will discuss such topics as:
• Type family — development of an individual typeface system for the project
(the axis of weight, width, contrast, etc)
• Italics. History, practice and principles of creation
• Creating a variable font
• Expanding of the character set: working on numbers, punctuation, etc
• Expanding of language support: extended Latin, diacritics
• Developing of Cyrillic
• Technical font parameters: blue zones, vertical metrics, hinting
• Kerning
• Font forms. OpenType features
• Correctly filling Font Info and generating type family
• Type project presentation tips
After the workshop you will have:
A typeface, of course! The goal of this course is to help you to advance your type project and plan out the type family. We will also design various styles (regular, bold, italic, etc) and scripts (Latin and Cyrillic).

We have invited a few surprise guest speakers who will share their design experience and will provide critiques for your projects.
Course details
Course format: online (zoom+slack)
Course duration: two semesters of 3 months (24 weeks in total)
Meetings twice a week (Tuesday 19:00 — 21:00 and Thursday 19:00 — 22:00 (GMT +3, Moscow)
Dates: October 2024–April 2025 with a month break in January
Final presentation at April 2025

What you will need for the course:
• A computer and basic knowledge of any font editor (we will provide you with a temporary license for Glyphs/Robofont for the duration of the course);
• A pre-existing typeface project that you will be developing in this course;
• Free time for homework assignments (at least 6-8 hours/week).

We would like to see the typeface that you are going to work on for the duration of the workshop. We can also help you to choose the most suitable typeface for this workshop from your portfolio.
